Ultra-low mortgage rates and pent-up demand for single-family homes will offset continued economic uncertainty and a supply shortage in 2021, with the net result being a 3.3% increase in California home sales and a modest 1.3% increase in the median price next year versus 2020, according to a California Association of Realtors forecast published Tuesday.

An Oakmont pedestrian safety project, inspired by a traffic study and a borough Girl Scout, is planned for next year.
Borough officials earmarked $40,000 in the 2021 budget for line painting for crosswalks along Allegheny River Boulevard and Allegheny Avenue.
It is unclear how much painting could be done with that amount of money.
The decision to improve the crosswalks was done after reviewing a traffic study by Wooster and Associates of Pittsburgh and a report from resident Audrey Myers, a ninth-grader at Riverview High School.
“I think she inspired us to move forward on it, and she has given us a wonderful tool to work with,” Councilwoman Nancy Ride said. “We’re able to use it rather than doing our research with our own staff, and we

In San Francisco, the pandemic and subsequent economic downturn have hit many local businesses like a ton of bricks. But for a select few sectors, business has been booming, from the grocery stores that saw mobs of panic-buyers to the gardening centers overwhelmed by bored quarantiners starting victory gardens.
So, what about our neighborhood hardware stores, trustworthy bastions of power tools and cleaning supplies? Are they crazy-busy from the legions of people taking on home improvement projects, or struggling to survive? Four of our favorite local spots told us how they’re doing, from enduring multiple burglaries to seeing soaring sales on unexpected items.
While business has generally been OK in 2020 at Cliff’s Variety in the Castro, general manager Terry Asten Bennett said they’re forecasting a rough fourth quarter. A lot of the store’s sales come from gifts, souvenirs and seasonal items, and with Halloween effectively canceled and

The roof for Christchurch’s new multi-use arena will cost $67.2 million alone – just $20m less than the main structure itself, new documents suggest.
The 25,000-seat covered central city arena is projected to cost a total $473m plus GST, with the Crown to contribute $220m and the Christchurch City Council providing the remaining $253m.
It will hold 35,000 people for concerts, including standing room. Up to 5000 temporary seats could be added at later.
Earlier this week, the council released documents outlining the project for companies interested in designing and building it. The council will pick a preferred contractor in December.

Just shy of a year after a tornado destroyed their Home Depot, employees who escaped being hurt are ready to reopen a rebuilt store that incorporates the home improvement retailer’s latest ideas.
The new Home Depot opens Thursday at its original spot on Forest Lane just east of North Central Expressway. Ten tornadoes on Oct. 20, 2019, caused $2 billion in damage to homes and businesses in Dallas, Richardson and Garland.
Store manager Jonathan Shields said about 50 of his former employees are back, and the store has hired another 150 people and plans to add as many as 50 more.
Three of Shields’ four assistant store managers returned, including Jordan Jasper, who made the fortunate call to send his co-workers home early on Oct. 20 after hearing the weather forecasts and likely saving some lives.
Jasper was honored at a ceremony attended by 500 area Home Depot employees a

Coronavirus sent the U.S. housing market for a spin this summer as demand outstripped supply—and the highly competitive environment appears to have continued into the fall.
“Normally, this last week of September is sort of a buyers’ sweet spot,”
Danielle Hale
, chief economist at Realtor.com, told Barron’s. In a typical year, September is when buyer demand decreases as home listings remain on the market, resulting in more options and less competition, she said.
But that was not the case this year. Homes spent an average of 54 days on the market nationally in September, 12 fewer days than the same month last year and three fewer than in August 2020, according to a Realtor.com study. That’s an unusual occurrence during a month when market activity normally begins to slow. This was the first year since at least 2016 when homes spent less
CINCINNATI — The city administration has its sights on more than 200 pedestrian crossing locations for improvements over the next year.
The Department of Transportation and Engineering this week posted its list of 209 locations that will receive at least one safety improvement for pedestrians throughout 36 of the city’s 52 neighborhoods. The projects range in scope from re-striping existing crosswalks and installing new signage to building new curb bump-outs and the city’s first raised crosswalks, which consist of a combination between a speed bump and crosswalk.
The city will fund the hundreds of improvements over the next year using money from the $750,000 Pedestrian Safety Fund along with roughly $1.3 million from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Absent from the list of proposed improvements are any projects near the site where 15-year-old Gabriella Rodriguez died after two drivers struck her as she was crossing Harrison Avenue in Westwood. That
