Hidden home risks that send insurance through the roof

When house hunting, the price of homeowners insurance probably isn’t top of mind. But homes with hidden risks can make getting coverage difficult, expensive or both. Learning how to identify them could save you a bundle.

This could be a particularly important concern for first-time homebuyers and those moving from cities to suburban or rural areas who may not be aware of common hazards, says Jennifer Naughton, risk consulting officer for North America for Chubb, an insurance company.

Three out of 10 city dwellers told a Chubb survey in early August that they were considering moving out of the city because of the novel coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, the number of first-time homebuyers in the first half of 2020 rose 4 percent compared to a year earlier as lower interest rates made mortgages more affordable, according to Genworth Mortgage Insurance.

Jets send all coaches, players home after positive COVID-19 test surfaces at facility, per reports

NFL: Preseason-New York Jets at Atlanta Falcons
Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots appear on track to play their rescheduled Week 5 games thanks to zero additional COVID-19 cases after Thursday testing, but now yet another team — and more games — may be affected by the virus. As ESPN and ProFootballTalk reported Friday morning, the New York Jets have sent all coaches and players home from their New Jersey facilities after a player registered a “presumptive positive” COVID test.

Said player is undergoing additional testing, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and the Jets merely cleared their facility “out of an abundance of caution.” But the news suddenly puts New York’s Sunday game against the Arizona Cardinals in question, Schefter added, with the Cards now uncertain whether they can or will fly to the East Coast for Week 5’s matchup.

Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said the team will “prepare

Mexican workers send home huge amounts of money amid virus

title=

A woman leaves a store offering services to send remittances to Mexico and Central America, Friday, Sept. 11, 2020, in San Diego. Mexican workers have confounded economists by sending home huge amounts of money during the coronavirus pandemic. Experts had predicted that migrant workers would wire less money, known as remittances, as the American economy took a dive.

AP

The coronavirus pandemic stopped work for nearly a month at the California farm where Luis earns $80 a day picking tomatoes, but that didn’t stop him from sending $800 to family in Mexico.

The money had traveled far by the time he was back at work in June. It kept his family fed, funded his father’s hernia operation and paid for other medical expenses.

Early in the pandemic, experts predicted that migrant workers in the U.S. like 32-year-old Luis — who didn’t want his last name used for

Devastating Wildfires Send Consumers Flocking to Home Depot, Says Jim Cramer

Jim Cramer is asked about the economic impact of the wildfires that are burning the West coast and how this could hurt a U.S. economy that’s already hurting because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Currently, there are fires burning in California, Oregon, and Washington. Over 500,000 people have been told to evacuate in Oregon.

Cramer noted that Home Depot has been “a rocket” lately. Here’s what he had to say about Home Depot a couple of days ago in his Real Money column.

“The rails were insane Wednesday. Could it be the note we got from a research firm that Federal Express (FDX) could beat the estimates? Is it that China’s very strong and there’s a lot of intermodal traffic? Again, no particular reason,” Cramer wrote in his Real Money column on Wednesday night. “Or how about Home Depot (HD) , Lowe’s (LOW) , Walmart (WMT) , Costco (COST) , Target
