OL Reign finally gets to play at home as it hosts Thorns

Jayda Evans

After a seven-month delay, the OL Reign will play a home match.

The Reign will host the Portland Thorns FC in a Cascadia derby on Saturday at Cheney Stadium. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, fans will not be permitted to attend. The match will air online via Twitch.

“It will be nice to finally have a match at home this year,” Reign coach Farid Benstiti said. “I wish we would be able to have the fans join us, as I know the players and I are thankful for their support. Even though we can’t play in front of them, we want to go out there and have a successful match and play our style.”

The National Women’s Soccer League postponed its season in March because of the pandemic. The Reign would’ve had their season opener in April.

The league played a Challenge Cup in Utah

The home at 2308 W. Giddings St. in the Lincoln Square neighborhood is involved in a lawsuit related to the team behind the popular HGTV series “Windy City Rehab.”

“The Morrisseys fear Ms. Gramenos is fraudulently attempting to sell and liquidate whatever equity she has in her personal home and transfer the funds to an LLC she co-owns with her boyfriend as a tactic to shield her personal assets from a judgment collection in the Morrisseys’ lawsuit,” the couple said in an emailed statement.

Gramenos’ attorney, Daniel Lynch, called Thursday’s filing “an unusual move to try to control the assets of a single

Spice Kitchen’s chef Abudu hosts fundraiser Yemeni children

Abudu from Kafe Mamai was joined by Spice Kitchen from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Salt Lake City to raise money for Yemen.

Abudu works to prepare food that reflects his African-Caribbean cuisine, including cinnamon-dusted plantains and bhajia.

Meals center on our culture, our ideas of home and family, they open up the community to a broader table. Sitting down to eat together can be powerful. Of all the questions that come up when opening a food business, though, Abudu of Kafé Mamai acknowledges that ’why’ is the most complex. For Abudu this may be especially true. While he loves to share his “culture and experience,” he is also passionate about using his small business to support others in his local community and around the globe. In August, Abudu worked to organize a fundraiser in support of Yemeni children.

Abudu, like several others who are aware of the Yemeni crisis, has felt called to action. Yemen lies at the center of concurrent crises. While war threatens the lives of citizens,

Chef Justin Severino hosts Quarantine Kitchen to raise funds for Make-A-Wish

One of Pittsburgh’s best chefs, Justin Severino (of Cure, Morcilla and Salty Pork Bits) wants to teach you how to cook one of his great dishes. At the same time, he wants to raise money for kids who deserve a break.

Severino will supply the food — which you can buy as a meal kit — and then he’ll take you through how to cook and present the meal via video.

That’s the creative idea behind Quarantine Kitchen, a fundraiser on Saturday, September 26 benefiting  Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The innovative fundraiser will support the foundation’s mission to fulfill wishes for kids with critical illnesses.

“I was really happy they called me,” says Severino, who notes that all involved in his restaurants miss pre-pandemic times. “To not be able to experience the most basic joy that we get to experience in the restaurant — which is feeding people
