Globe gains momentum on data and video experience improvements, well-ahead of aggressive builds

Globe has been consistently upgrading its network and accelerating infra builds as part of its efforts to provide better data experience and connectivity to its subscribers. Fed minutes, RBA rate decision, services PMIs, tesco H1 numbers, UK data

1) Global Services PMIs (Sep) – 05/10 – after the slowdown seen in Q2, the manufacturing sector has managed to hold up reasonably well. The recovery in the services sector has been another story with the recent flash PMIs in Germany and France slipping back into contraction territory. This is an increasing concern, particularly for the weaker countries like Italy and Spain who tried to boost economic activity by way of tourism in the summer months, and who now appear to be paying the price for that with increased infection rates, with Spain especially having to impose new stringent lockdowns. The additional imposition of quarantines and other travel restrictions in the last two months is likely to see further economic deterioration in September. In August Spain and Italy saw contractions of 47.7 and 47.1, and it’s unlikely that September will be much better, at a time when France services PMI

Some of the deficiencies included the wrong staffing and antiquated systems, one expert said, adding that the state Department of Health had been unwilling to share certain data and cooperate with other organizations on several occasions.

“This pandemic just shows you the historic deficiencies in the system,” University of Hawaii professor and health economist Victoria Fan told the Civil Beat.

However, experts are crediting the improvements to the new leadership at the DOH.

South Africa rand falls after poor data, stocks rise

Updates prices, adds stocks

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 10 (Reuters)South Africa’s rand weakened on Thursday as data showing contractions in mining and manufacturing in July pointed to a slow recovery in the domestic economy.

At 1540 GMT the rand ZAR=D3 was 1.59% weaker at 16.8800 per dollar.

Statistics South Africa agency figures showed on Thursday that mining output fell 9.1% in July while manufacturing was down 10.6%.

On the other hand, the central bank said that the current account balance swung to a deficit in the second quarter as the trade surplus more than halved due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“South Africa’s weakening economic fundamentals have dragged down the rand,” Investec economist Annabel Bishop said in a research note.

“Concerns over the future of domestic economic growth are also limiting the rand from gaining fully from positive global financial market sentiment.”

Data on Tuesday showed that
