Renovation of Holmes Theatre lobby to cost $332,000

Bids on the project were opened Tuesday, Oct. 13, with the contract going to the low bidder, T.F. Powers Construction of Fargo, at an overall cost of $342,700. The bid package included a base bid of $331,900, plus one $10,800 alternate for additional brick work that may or may not be necessary once an interior wall covering is removed.

The renovations are slated to begin Monday, Oct. 19. The bulk of the project will be funded through a $290,000 CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act grant from Becker County, which was approved last month. The terms of the federally-funded grant require that the project be directly related to COVID-19 safety improvements, and that the funds must be used up no later than Dec. 1.

Though some renovation of the theater lobby was always going to be needed to accommodate construction of the new, adjacent county museum, recent changes

Replacing the Cabinetry in This Kitchen Only Cost $500

You’ll be surprised—and inspired!—by some of the cost-cutting ideas that went into the renovation of this kitchen in a mid-1800s Victorian home located in Kingston, New York. Principal designer Maryline Damour of design and build firm Damour Drake undertook the project from concept to completion with the goal of transforming the space utilizing a careful mix of high/low budget materials. The result offers so many examples of how to use a renovation budget wisely.

AFTER: Maryline achieved her vision of a “rustic, glam, Victorian” kitchen by integrating a mix of high/low materials. Opting to refurbish used cabinets purchased for $500 and construct inexpensive countertops left room in the budget for splurging on the wood-paneled wall treatment, and the eye catching light fixture.

In terms of design, “the goal was an updated Victorian style kitchen,” Maryline explains. She wanted the kitchen to reflect modern aesthetics while referencing the architectural details

4 Things That May Cost More In Retirement And Why

People often underestimate how much they will need to maintain their desired lifestyle in retirement. Most assume their expenses will go down when they’re no longer working, and the kids are out of college. While certain work-related costs, such as commuting, parking, clothing or uniforms, and even that daily latte may cease, other costs for travel, entertainment and healthcare can quickly replace, or outpace, expenses incurred during your working years. That’s why it’s so important to estimate your retirement expenses well before you pull the plug on work.

Determining how much you may need in retirement takes a little work, but it’s much easier if you have a good handle on your current expenses. If you’re not sure what you’re spending now, create a budget. Expenses generally fall into three broad categories:

  1. Essential expenses
  2. Discretionary expenses
  3. One-time expenses

Begin by determining what your necessities are. Ask yourself: “If I

Expect your home remodeling to ‘cost 50% more and take 50% longer,’ says finance expert

So you’re thinking about doing a major home renovation. You’ve been stuck indoors since the pandemic — and you plan to be for a while longer. So why not put some money into making it look nicer?

If you’ve never remodeled your home before, getting through the process can be a complete nightmare. I’ve been through four projects, and none of them were pleasant. But, after the first two, I finally wisened up to the game that some general contractors play to extract as much money from homeowners as possible.

Here’s what I learned from all my painful, exhausting and costly experiences:

1. It will cost more than expected.

Competition is fierce, so a contractor might initially offer an attractive price just to beat out all the other bids. Their goal is to get you to sign the contract. Once you’re locked in, they can upsell you with add-ons.

If

DIY or Pay a Pro? What to Know About the Cost of Protecting Your Home This Fall

Fall is here, and while we’re all busy guzzling pumpkin lattes and buying sweaters, homeowners need to figure out what to do about all the leaves falling in their yards — and onto their roofs and gutters.

As we’re previously pointed out, if you own a home and live in a spot where leaves and debris can accumulate in your gutters, you may want to invest in gutter guards. These guards help prevent your gutters from getting clogged by leaves — a situation that can cause problems for your roof, drainage, and the gutters themselves.

Keep in mind that even after you’ve installed gutter guards, you’re still going to need to give your gutters a cleaning about once a year according to Eamon Lynch, director of warranty service at the Philadelphia-based Power Home Remodeling. Why? Just to make sure that no bits of debris

Grand Designs NZ: Extreme Piha beach-house build highlights stress of underestimating cost

REVIEW: There’s a lovely story at the start of this Grand Designs NZ episode – Joseph and Sooz Hardie used to jump the fence with a bottle of bubbles to sit outside an old bach on the clifftop at Piha.

They would lap up the view and pretend it was theirs. And then, lo and behold, the bach came on the market, and it did become their home. (See, dreams can come true.)

Six years later they demolish it to build a better one on the “perilously steep site”. This time, the living areas will be on the lower level, so there will be a flow out to the landscape, because Sooz says the old house felt more like an apartment, with no connection to the “whenua”.

Joseph and Sooz Hardie demolished an old bach that was their first home to build a stunning contemporary home high above Piha beach. They are pictured with Grand Designs NZ presenter Chris Moller (right).

Two Bengali Films Delve Into The Emotional Cost Of Women’s Housework Like No Hindi Film Has

Some days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi locked us down on 25 March with the battle analogy of the 18-day Kurukshetra war, the celebrity housework videos began.

Then, the men who did not have cameras installed for easy recording provided dishwashing updates, and gradually, washing shortcuts and tips, on Whatsapp chats. By the middle of April, three weeks into one of the longest and most draconian lockdowns in the world, the feature stories in newspapers about men participating in housework began.

What was barely seen (even on social media), were the stories of “housewives”, those for whom housework did not feel like an adventure to showcase. Women who may have had access to social media, but the lockdown eroded their free time savagely. There was a certain kind of privileging of cooking on social media, but these were not the women who were exhausted with cooking and cleaning and meal-prepping
