Maker of At-Home Covid Test Seeks Funds at $1 Billion Valuation

(Bloomberg) — Everlywell Inc., a health startup that sells a Covid-19 home-testing kit, is in talks to raise fresh capital at a valuation of $1 billion or more.

Prospective investors including venture capital firms are participating in the discussions, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named. The company reached a valuation of $175 million after a fundraising round last year, according to Pitchbook estimates.

The latest effort, if successful, would vault Everlywell to unicorn status, giving it a lead among niche telehealth startups that are rushing to expand. The global pandemic has been a boon for such companies as patients seek to avoid the risk of visiting a doctor.

Brigham, Broad Institute team to test 10,000 people in at-home coronavirus study called TestBoston

Over the course of six months, study participants will get monthly at-home kits for viral and antibody testing. They’ll also complete routine surveys and can seek additional testing if they develop symptoms, officials said.

Ongoing study results could reveal warning signs about how COVID-19 cases are changing in the Boston area. It will also help clinicians learn more about whether contracting the virus protects someone from future reinfection, according to the statement.

TestBoston will be led by Dr. Ann Woolley and Dr. Lisa Cosimi, infectious disease physicians at Brigham and Women’s, and Dr. Deborah Hung, a codirector of the Infectious Disease and Microbiome Program of the Broad Institute and an infectious disease and critical care physician at the Brigham.

Even as advocates cite bureaucratic red tape blocking fast and cheap home coronavirus tests, the federal government’s regulatory agency overseeing testing says it will be flexible and encourage developers to seek approval.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a document on July 29 calling for home tests to correctly identify the virus at least 90% of the time. But a high-ranking FDA official overseeing testing told USA TODAY the agency will consider tests with lower sensitivity. 

Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said the agency’s recommendations issued more than two months ago are “starting points.”

Startup Lands VC Funds As Demand Surges For Its At-Home Test Kits

Proov, an at-home hormone testing kit company, has announced funding from two venture capital firms that aim to build up underrepresented founders.

The investment – the amount was not disclosed – from Lightship Capital and Texas HALO Fund will help Proov scale in the wake of Covid-19 as the company continues to offer fertility diagnostics technology to the retail market.

MFB Fertility Inc. launched Proov in 2018. Its FDA-approved at-home test measures the presence of progesterone metabolite PdG in urine to help a woman confirm ovulation; low progesterone is the number one cause of infertility and preventable miscarriage. The company was originally co-founded in Boulder, Colorado, by two women who both struggled to conceive.
