STEVENS POINT – Meijer won’t open next year in Stevens Point, but the company still plans to build a new store eventually.
Meijer purchased 28 acres of land in 2017 on the northeast corner of Portage County R and HH, near the shopping plaza that is home to Walmart Supercenter, Kohl’s and Lowe’s Home Improvement. According to city documents filed in 2019, the company was in its planning stages and started applying for sign permits. Documents at that time indicated the store would likely open in 2021.
Frank Guglielmi, the senior director of corporate communications for Meijer, told a Stevens Point Journal reporter the company still owns the land and plans to eventually build a store. Guglielmi said the company’s building schedule can be fluid, and it has no timeline yet for construction or opening. Meijer is currently focused on construction for its 2021 stores, he said.
Ryan Kernosky, the director of community development for Stevens Point, said while there is no timeline set for construction or opening, city staff is hopeful for a groundbreaking in 2021 or 2022.
When Meijer announced its plans for a Stevens Point store in 2018, Guglielmi told a Stevens Point Journal reporter construction of a store normally takes about 12 to 14 months.
Meijer offers a selection of groceries, electronics, sporting goods, household essentials, home improvement items, beauty and personalized care products, pet care, school and office supplies, clothing, jewelry, garden and outdoor products and more.
Hendrik Meijer and his son, Fred, founded Meijer in 1934 as a supermarket. The first store opened out of Hendrik Meijer’s barber shop in Greenville, Michigan, according to the company’s website. The chain now has more than 245 stores throughout six states, with corporate headquarters near Grand Rapids, Michigan. For more information, visit meijer.com.
