Best smart home devices of 2020 that aren’t made by Google or Amazon

Google and Amazon dominate the smart home industry. Beyond Amazon’s expanding lineup of Echo smart speakers, the tech giant also owns home security brands Ring and Blinkand Wi-Fi router brand Eero. Smart thermostat maker Ecobee gets funding from Amazon. Google owns Nest and brought the company further under its control this year, rebranding most of its connected devices from “Google Home” to “Google Nest,” like the Google Nest Mini and the Google Nest Hub

Our current list of best smart home products features 12 products; seven of them are Amazon or Google devices — or devices made by Amazon- or Google-owned (or funded) companies. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. They’re all solid gadgets and we heartily recommend them. As much as Google and Amazon (the latter especially) deserve credit for bringing some much needed organization to the smart home category via

Alleged Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse won’t face charges in home state of Illinois

Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager accused of shooting two protesters in Kenosha, Wis., this summer, will not face any charges in his home state of Illinois, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Prosecutors in Illinois said an investigation found that the AR-15-style rifle used in the Kenosha shooting was purchased, stored and used in Wisconsin, according to the AP. There was no evidence that the gun was ever in Rittenhouse’s physical possession in Illinois, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Rittenhouse is being held in a juvenile detention center in Lake County, Ill., without bond. He is due back in court on Oct. 30 for an extradition hearing, where he is challenging his extradition from Illinois to Wisconsin.

Rittenhouse, 17, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the killing of two protesters during demonstrations in Kenosha over the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot during

Saints explore playing games at LSU; league says a Week 18 is possible

NFL owners met remotely, and afterward league leaders said that while no options have been ruled out, they’re not focused on measures such as pausing the season or using a bubble approach for the playoffs. Commissioner Roger Goodell said the review by the league and the NFL Players Association of the Tennessee Titans’ outbreak is “not about discipline” but safety.

The Saints said in a statement from a spokesman that their game operations staff met Tuesday with LSU officials to discuss the prospect of the team playing games at Tiger Stadium. The team said the school has been “gracious and enthusiastic” about that possibility. The scenario also has been discussed with the NFL, the Saints said.

“Obviously, our overwhelming preference is to play our games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with partial fan attendance, but there has been no indication from the city on when, or if, this might be approved,”

Solano County legalized home food popups. But chefs still can’t sell

When Solano County approved a new California law that would legalize home-based kitchen operations in April, it seemed like Cheska Kistner’s plans to open a restaurant in her Benicia home would finally come to fruition. The measure, California’s AB626, allows for what are known as microenterprise food businesses, which Alameda County also made inroads toward legalizing yesterday. But no Bay Area county has yet fully implemented the 2018 law, leaving entrepreneurs like Kistner in limbo.

New Orleans Saints explore playing home games outdoors at LSU’s Tiger Stadium

The New Orleans Saints have begun discussions with LSU about holding future home games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, a team spokesman said.

“LSU has been gracious and enthusiastic regarding hosting our future games and we very much appreciate their partnership,” said Greg Bensel, the Saints’ senior vice president for communications. “We have also discussed the possibility of moving our home games to LSU with the NFL and they are aware of our exploring this option.

“Obviously, our overwhelming preference is to play our games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with partial fan attendance, but there has been no indication from the city on when, or if, this might be approved.”

The Saints have played three of eight scheduled regular-season home games in the Superdome this season with no ticketed fans in attendance. The few hundred in attendance consisted primarily of privately invited family members of players, coaches or

Florida Coach Wanted 90,000 Fans at Home This Week, But Now His Players Have COVID

Florida Gators football coach Dan Mullen said he wanted 90,000 screaming fans at his home stadium this weekend when they host the LSU Tigers. Now, they hope to just play a game after suspending team activities because some of their players have caught coronavirus.

The school announced Tuesday that it has suspended athletic activities after five football players tested positive for COVID-19. Florida athletics director Scott Stricklin issued a statement that said the suspension of activities was out of caution.

“Out of an abundance of caution, team activities are paused as of Tuesday afternoon. Head coach Dan Mullen has been in communication with football players and their parents, and I have had conversations with the Southeastern Conference office, last week’s opponent Texas A&M, and this week’s opponent LSU,” Stricklin said.

Strucklin added that the UF sports medicine department will reassess the situation on Wednesday.

The Cleveland Browns (4-1) are 3.5-point underdogs for their Week 6 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-0) at Heinz Field. Kickoff will be Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Below, we take a look at the early Week 6 betting odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook.

Cleveland pulled through with its third straight multi-possession victory Sunday, defeating the Indianapolis Colts 32-23. McConnell says Senate to vote on PPP bill next week

CLOSE

Racist policies have led to COVID-19 being more dangerous and deadly for Black, Latino, Asian and Indigenous Americans than for white Americans.

USA TODAY

WASHINGTON – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Tuesday the Senate would vote on a roughly $500 billion COVID-19 stimulus plan next week, only two weeks before the election, as President Donald Trump urged Republicans to “go big or go home” on stimulus.

McConnell said in a statement the Republican-led Senate’s “first order of business” once they return Monday would be to vote on a “targeted” relief plan, including new funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), a loan forgiveness program for small businesses.

“Unless Democrats block this aid for workers, we will have time to pass it before we proceed as planned to the pending Supreme Court nomination as soon as it is reported by the Judiciary Committee,” he said, referring to the ongoing
