Bay Area hardware stores battle through a crazy year

In San Francisco, the pandemic and subsequent economic downturn have hit many local businesses like a ton of bricks. But for a select few sectors, business has been booming, from the grocery stores that saw mobs of panic-buyers to the gardening centers overwhelmed by bored quarantiners starting victory gardens.

So, what about our neighborhood hardware stores, trustworthy bastions of power tools and cleaning supplies? Are they crazy-busy from the legions of people taking on home improvement projects, or struggling to survive? Four of our favorite local spots told us how they’re doing, from enduring multiple burglaries to seeing soaring sales on unexpected items.

Cliff’s Variety

While business has generally been OK in 2020 at Cliff’s Variety in the Castro, general manager Terry Asten Bennett said they’re forecasting a rough fourth quarter. A lot of the store’s sales come from gifts, souvenirs and seasonal items, and with Halloween effectively canceled and

Yankees vs. Rays score: Mike Brosseau carries Tampa Bay to ALCS with late home run on Aroldis Chapman

The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the New York Yankees 2-1 in Friday’s Game 5 of the American League Division Series. As a result, the Rays secured the victory in the best-of-five series, as well as a trip to the AL Championship Series, where they’ll meet the Houston Astros.

The Rays fell behind the Yankees early, when Aaron Judge delivered a solo home run to give New York a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Yet it was the Rays who struck next and struck last. Austin Meadows hit a game-tying home run against Gerrit Cole in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Brosseau then launched a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the eighth to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead, which they would hold onto for the victory.

This is Tampa Bay’s first trip to the ALCS since 2008, when they won the pennant. Here are four takeaways from

Bay Area home prices soar with suburban boom

With millions out of work, and restaurants, shops and retailers closing, one spot in the economy shines for thriving and affluent professionals — Bay Area real estate.

As if the devastating pandemic had passed over the tech campuses, Spanish-tiled roofs and Tesla-filled garages of Silicon Valley, luxury home sales exploded in August and drove median prices up 16 percent from the previous year to levels approaching the market peak in 2018.

The median sale price for an existing single family home in August in the Bay Area was $975,000, according to DQNews data. The gains were driven by a limited supply of properties for sale and a greater portion of high-end homes selling, agents and economists said.

“We’ve never seen such high price appreciation in a recession,” said Selma Hepp, deputy chief economist with real estate data firm CoreLogic. “The recession hasn’t hit everyone the same way.”

Co-working spaces like Station House in St. Petersburg, Hyde House in Hyde Park Village and the new Office Evolution Space on Harbour Island are, too. It might not look the same as pre-pandemic days: There are no groups cluttered together, anyone walking about is in a mask, the hand sanitizer is plentiful, and the air smells of Lysol. But in 2020, these co-working spaces might be the closest to the pre-pandemic work life anyone can get.

New Orleans Saints see improvements, but not enough to post victory over Green Bay

The New Orleans Saints did some good things on offense and defense against Green Bay. They just didn’t do enough of them.

There were enough loose ends for the Saints that they couldn’t produce a victory Sunday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, where the Packers posted a 37-30 victory that was the second consecutive loss for New Orleans (1-2).

Penalties continue to be a significant hindrance (eight for 83 yards against the Packers), especially defensively, and two starters on offense (left guard Andrus Peat and tight end Jared Cook) couldn’t finish the game due to injuries. New Orleans has some cleaning up to do before it can put itself in position to win, and the next opportunity for that will come Sunday on the road against Detroit.

OFFENSE: Overall, it probably was the Saints’ best offensive showing this season. They had 397 yards, quarterback Drew Brees was sharp (29 of
