Kalamazoo man shot while asleep at home ID’d by police

KALAMAZOO, MI — A Kalamazoo man shot and killed early last Friday was asleep in his home when a bullet passed through a wall of his Northside home and hit him, police say.

Robert Earl Johnson, 54, was shot and killed while asleep in his home in the 1600 block of N. Church Street at around 1 a.m. Oct. 9, according to a news release issued by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

Police and medical workers tried to resuscitate the victim on scene but were not successful, police said last week. The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.

The suspect in the shooting, a 23-year-old Kalamazoo man, was arrested Sunday and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on murder and weapon charges, as well as on an outstanding warrant, police said.
