South Plainfield – Council President Christine Faustini and Councilman Derryck White, this week, announce plans to improve Cotton Street Park, Putnam Park, Shadyside Park and Pitt Street Park in late 2020 into spring of 2021. They also are providing news and updates about our Senior Center and our fall recreation programs
“I want to thank the entire Mayor and Council in supporting these much-needed improvements to our parks. With all that is going on, we need to make sure that our community has a place to enjoy for years to come and making improvements to these facilities are important,” said Councilman Derryck White.
“On the recreation and parks front we have done as much as we could in this very challenging and unique year,” said Councilwoman Christine Faustini, who serves as the liaison to Recreation and the Senior Center. “A big thanks goes to Recreation Director Elizabeth Yarus, Senior Center Director Tree Olano, all the commissioners, and volunteers for all their support and generous donations”

The following are just some of the updates and improvements that will be happening around South Plainfield:
Park Improvements: Our upcoming park revitalization projects will include a new playground structure at Pitt Street Park. New basketball courts at Putnam Park, Cotton Street Park and Shadyside Park. New walking paths at Cotton Street Park and a revitalized pavilion at Shadyside Park.
Recreation Programs: Recreation was able to provide several outdoor camps this summer which were had an overwhelming response. This fall they will offer Soccer, Field Hockey and our extremely popular Multi-Sports program designed to give our youngest kids a little experience with several popular options, all under the supervision of professional coaches. We are looking to forward to exploring new options for programs in arts and music when indoor space is once again able to be used. The weight room has been reorganized and reopened this week for socially distanced work outs.
The Senior Center: Our Senior Center has cared for our Seniors throughout the pandemic. As demand increased so did our outreach. Our Staff continues to work to supply meals, essentials, support, and guidance daily. Care for our youthful and active Senior citizens never stops with drive by cookout experiences, storm preparedness kits, and new safely run outdoor Zumba and Yoga programs. In addition, we added two new transportation vans in the past year. We can’t wait to see our seniors again, in person, as soon as possible.
“These are just some of the items we look forward to building upon and a few of the things that we have been able to accomplish,” said Councilman Derryck White. “We love our hometown and want it to continue to be a great place to raise our children, while keeping it affordable for our families and seniors”
Council President Faustini agreed, “Our goals are to keep taxes affordable, while investing more in our hometown. Let’s continue to work together on building a stronger South Plainfield.”
