A Narnia-Inspired Design, on Long Island

But rarely is the mythologizing as specific and literary as it is for the Long Island guesthouse of Betsy and Bryan H. Lawrence: They call it the Narnia House.

Yes, it has a surprising installation, as in the classic C.S. Lewis novel “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Stepping through a French armoire at the top of a back stair leads to a second-floor passage and toward a Narnia-themed bedroom.

This Greek revival home is a replica of the antebellum D’Evereux Hall mansion in Natchez, Mississippi. The mansion features a spiral staircase, two kitchens, and custom cypress flooring throughout the 7,450 square foot home.

The home, located at 123 Shannon Road in Lafayette, has 6 bedrooms, 4 and a half bathrooms, is on the market for $2.95 million. 

Six fluted Doric columns stretch out across the front porch with a custom designed wrought iron balcony. The timeless design on the front patio is of old cypress, with brick floors from old Chicago bricks finished with beeswax. 

The home is centered on two lots, for a total of one and a half acres.

KAA Design and Pamela Smith Interiors Interweave Indoors and Out for a Southern California Abode

Most empty nesters downsize. Not this couple: Rebuilding on the same Southern California property where they’d raised their three children, the duo upsized from around 6,000 square feet to 10,500—and did a complete about-face design-wise. Leading the clients on their journey from traditional to contemporary were L.A.–based architecture firm KAA Design and San Diego’s Pamela Smith Interiors. A full-fledged collaboration gave rise to what’s been dubbed the Tree House.

Folks, we need to talk about Siri.

It has, on a number of recent occasions, been brought up among staff at Gizmodo that Siri’s hands-free help in a number of environments is considerably lacking—including and especially in the kitchen.

Questions often go unanswered, requests for volume control unheard, and god help you if you need Apple’s virtual assistant to pull up a recipe or navigate between your webpages. Siri, I’m afraid to say, absolutely sucks at being even minimally useful while you’re cooking. Siri will make you huff in exasperation after the third time you’ve repeated a simple request.
