Biophilic design to set the pace at Mount Lawley

Perth architecture and property development group Baltinas is preparing for the official launch of its art deco-inspired, wellbeing-focused CHALLIS development on Beaufort Street in Mount Lawley.

The environmentally conscious mixed-use development on the former Highgate Drycleaners site features 26 elegant luxury apartments, including three sub-penthouses, and an already-sold penthouse.

The development, named after the Challis family who ran the drycleaners since the 1950s, comes in a range of one to three-bedroom configurations priced from $595,000.

“There is a choice between a light or dark interior colour scheme, and all apartments enjoy ample natural light and expansive tree-lined balconies,” Baltinas Development Sales Rebecca Frost said.

“They also feature unique curved island benches in the kitchens and curved feature walls and windows for showstopper appeal.

“The sub-penthouses boast spacious kitchens with high-end European appliances and natural stone benchtops, and the bathrooms include designer brushed gold tapware, floating wall-hung designer vanities and freestanding baths that exude luxury.”

CHALLIS draws inspiration from Mount Lawley’s cornerstone art deco buildings, including The Astor Theatre, Beaucott Building and the Alexander Buildings.

“Also called style moderne, this forward-focused mixed-use development pays tribute to the glamour of the art deco movement that originated in the 1920s and developed into a major style in Western Europe and the US during the 30s,” Baltinas Architect Barry Baltinas said.

“Our intention was to create a sleek and anti-traditional elegance that symbolised wealth and sophistication.

“CHALLIS embraces the art deco part of history within Mount Lawley, with its own interpretation of the ethos to deliver a design that is a celebration of beautiful architecture, holding space through the play of form and light.”

Ms Frost said the development would be a landmark for the surrounding area which would set the pace for future developments.

“We believe it will enrich the local community with its new bustling retail, cafe, office space and significant public art, and therefore play an important role in activating one of the city’s best-loved retail, entertainment and dining strips,” she said.

“Like the European cafe strips that are buzzing with life at all times, the more residents that live in a town centre, the more it adds to an area’s vibrancy.

“As well as the residences, a refurbished Highgate Drycleaners shopfront will form part of CHALLIS – and there are also two offices and four retail spaces.”

The development also places a strong emphasis on sustainability.

“From solar panels and rainwater harvesting technology to biophilic design principles, CHALLIS has a holistic focus which, in light of recent global events, is generating a lot of attention,” Mr Baltinas said. “Biophilic design, which is a way of designing the places where we live and work so they have a balanced connection to nature and create a sense of wellbeing, is something astute buyers are valuing more and more.

“This is a landmark location and a building that sets the pace for future boutique, mixed-use developments in Perth, while activating one of the city’s best-loved retail, entertainment and dining strips.”

Construction is tipped to begin next month and is scheduled to be completed at the end of next year.

The display suite is open for viewing on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 1pm.
