The nursing home for veterans in Massachusetts suffered a deadly Covid-19 outbreak in March and April. According to staff and union accounts shared with CNN, the home dealt with systemic issues like short staffing for years.

On Thursday, a grand jury indicted Superintendent Bennett Walsh, 50, and former medical director David Clinton, 71, “for causing or permitting serious bodily injury or neglect of an elder during the Covid-19 outbreak,” Healey said.

They are each facing 10 counts: five counts of criminal neglect and five counts of serious bodily injury.

During closure, Nature Center workers had a wild time adding a host of improvements

The peace and quiet that often prevails at WNC Nature Center recently seems … well, unnatural. But that’s the wild reality during the course of a pandemic.

“It’s surreal, actually,” director Chris Gentile said. “You know, we’ve had the place to ourselves now for about six months. And the animals are wondering where everybody is.”

But, while the center was closed, two employees saw an opening.

“What a difference a day makes,” said Eddie Martinez, a maintenance technician.

He and facilities curator Jason Marshall took advantage of a mostly empty facility and completed a host of improvements.

They’re the News 13 Persons of the Week.

The stock market has been looking for a strong recovery, and on Friday, it finally got one. Even though investors are still uncertain about what another potential round of federal government stimulus might look like or whether the COVID-19 crisis will continue, they nevertheless feel confident that the long-range prospects for the economy and the markets are sound. That helped lift the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) considerably on Friday.

“The library could use a major update,” said Marta Haireek, 20. “I often go for walks with my mom, and I’d like to see safer streets and sidewalks, as well as some investments in the park.”

Katrina Srour, who described herself as a busy mother of two, said traffic calming measures and the safety of her children are the most important matters to her in Ward 7 — especially in school zones.

Flashing crosswalks, lower speed limits, and separate bus bays are some of ideas she would like explored. “I want to thank Farah for hearing our issues and concerns in the area,” Srour said.

This Australian Kitchen Remodel Has A Magical Secret Passageway

While demoing the kitchen in interior designer Alison Lewis and her husband Dave’s Melbourne, Australia bungalow the crew from CJ and C Construction kept it real: “They jokingly referred to it as ‘The House From Hell,’” Lewis says with a chuckle. The brick inside the walls was crumbling, termites had ruined parts of the flooring, and the accents were, as Lewis says, about “as beige as beige comes.” Challenges notwithstanding, the couple focused on the endgame and played cheerleader, pushing the team to forge ahead.

Five weeks and $50,000 later, the Lewis family had a larger, combination kitchen/dining room outfitted in new appliances, whitewashed wood flooring, and an undulating peninsula. The most-notable introduction, though, is the cabinetry by Project Cabinets and the storage it supplies. Here’s exactly how she made the most of the new space.

While eye-catching details certainly make a room’s design pop—a whimsical light fixture here, the perfect polished-meets-punk cabinet handles there—you should take it from the experts and start from the ground up.

Umansky also believes that area rugs can be an asset atop any flooring, from classic hardwood to tile and beyond. “We use area
